Now if we are indeed a cross-section of the population show yourselves:
Who else likes industrial bands?
To name a few: Coil, Current 93, Psychic TV, Ministry, The Butthole Surfers (OK that's more punk, but still), Nurse with Wound, Hitting Birth, Smegma, and then some old stuff like Throbbing Gristle, Stockhausen, or some 90s stuff like Hansel Und Grettil I think it is, it's a German band.
Anyway even if it's not industrial but what we all used to call 'Underground', add it in: KMFDM or any other techno / trance stuff cool as well.
Seems a lot of tastes around here are quite vanilla, even though I like a lot of what's posted in the metal / alternative arena on here ...
Also anyone else been to an Industrial show?
Wow, nobody? Is this an age thing maybe? Or perhaps geographical, some on here say the majority of participants are from Texas. I mean the trendy types I would not expect to even know what Industrial music is, or why one would occasionally listen to it, ... but, really?
Surprising.
I like a bit, celldweller and Pendalum. I should listen to a bit more.
I have been on a Current 93 kick for a while.
David Tibet's dark musings definitely wear on a person after a few straight weeks.
Their most recent album was my favorite of last year by far although it's more a rock album than anything else. His folky
period (probably the longest of his career?) is also great. Also really like what I've heard of NWW although I'm nowhere near as well-versed in their catalog as C93's. They're playing a weekend of shows together in London on 5/28-29 with a few other bands, by the way. There was talk of some NYC gigs for a while but it looks like that unfortunately fell through. :(
Speaking of Smegma, they just released a huge box set; still yet to get around to that, though. They are also in a pretty good documentary on the Portland, OR noise community entitled People Who Do Noise.
Throbbing Gristle and Stockhausen are also great although I'd put Stockhausen in the neo-classical category if anything.
Heldon are a great 70's German band that may be up your alley.
I just saw the reunited Public Image Ltd. a couple days ago; better than I thought they'd be.
Er...Heldon are French, not German.
Wow coolness, and I'll have to check out that documentary. I saw Smegma at the university out here this must have been almost twenty years ago. Really fascinating stuff.
Going to an industrial show is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I saw a one-man operation called "Dan" who did everything with electrical signals and while it had the typical heavy noise forest sound, it had a lot of dissonant harmonies.
One of those things people who aren't into it just don't understand.
Any of you remember Current 93's take on Christopher Robin? Not exactly industrial, but it sure was entertaining.
Oh and John Balance of Coil died a few years ago. Their most famous one I think was Horse Rotorvator, and that was pretty shocking in the early 1980s when it came out.
Yeah, industrial and noise shows are definitely unique experiences. It's kind of lame that a lot of artists are opting to produce entire live sets on laptops now, though. Kind of kills the energy. I did catch a band recently that used a lot of circuit-bent toys to make really interesting sounds. Some great recent acts (last 10 years) worth checking out include Wolf Eyes, Yellow Swans, Aaron Dilloway and Black Dice. Swans' (not to be confused with Yellow Swans) early stuff should also be included in this discussion.
